Fantasy Basketball Perspective: Scott Skiles Fired

by Stephen Kersey on December 26th, 2007

Scott SkilesOn Christmas Eve, the Chicago Bulls gave Scott Skiles a present. The bad news for Skiles is that present was a pink slip. Skiles, who was in his fourth season as head coach of the Bulls, took the fall for the Bulls winning only nine of their first 26 games.

While coaching may have been part of Chicago’s struggles, poor play was another huge part. The Bulls got substandard play out of a number of players offensively, and as a unit the Bulls weren’t playing as well defensively. Add that up and that equals one head coach looking for work.

How does Skiles getting fired affect fantasy basketball? It’s tough to say until we know who is going to replace Skiles. However, it’s safe to assume that many things will change.

1) More time for young players
Skiles was reluctant to rely on young players such as Tyrus Thomas and Joakim Noah. The next coach will probably be told that Thomas and Noah should be bigger parts to the puzzle. Thomas especially could be given a longer leash and a stay in the starting lineup.

2) A quicker hook for struggling players
Skiles is a coach who can sometimes be loyal to a fault. If a player like Ben Gordon was struggling, Skiles wasn’t always quick with benching the struggling player. That could change under the new coach.

3) More reliable rotations
One aspect of Skiles that drove fantasy basketball owners crazy was the inability to trust his rotations. One day, a player could go from a starting spot to not playing at all. The next coach will no doubt be an improvement in this area.
